What is a grid maker?

A grid maker is a tool that draws an even grid — over an image, or onto a printable page. This grid maker does both from one place. On the image side it lays true square cells over any JPG, PNG or WebP so you can measure, align, trace or divide a picture with precision. On the paper side it produces graph paper PDFs whose 5 mm or 1/4-inch squares measure exactly right on paper.

Artists use a grid maker to transfer drawings at correct proportions. Designers use one to check alignment and layout rhythm. Teachers print grid paper for math and handwriting practice, and makers use printed grids as cutting and drilling guides. Because everything runs locally in your browser, the grid maker works instantly, keeps your files private and needs no account.

The grid maker above is already loaded with a demo image and a live preview, so you can try it right now — upload a photo, slide the column counter, watch the grid update in real time, and download the result. No tutorial needed: if you can drag a slider, you can use this grid maker.

One grid maker, two precise engines

The image engine computes every line in the source image's own pixel space. Square mode divides the picture into equal columns and derives the cell size, so the cells are always perfect squares — never stretched to fit the aspect ratio. Pixel mode draws a line every N pixels when you need an absolute distance instead. Colors, line width, opacity and A1/B1 cell labels are all adjustable, and the preview always matches the exported file.

The paper engine is built for physical accuracy. Paper size, orientation, spacing, margin and line weight are all defined in real millimetres, and the exported PDF is drawn with true vector lines — not a screenshot. A4 measures exactly 210 × 297 mm and US Letter 215.9 × 279.4 mm, so a 5 mm grid printed at 100% really measures 5 mm under a ruler.

  • Square or pixel-spaced grids on any image
  • PNG, JPG and transparent-grid exports
  • Print-ready A4 / Letter graph paper PDFs
  • Numbered A1/B1 labels for drawing references
  • Everything free, local and watermark-free

Why use an online grid maker?

Desktop apps for gridding exist, but an online grid maker removes every step that slows you down: no download, no install, no license, no learning curve. You open the page, the tool is already on the first screen, and a demo image means you can test the full workflow before committing your own file.

Speed matters when you are iterating with a grid maker. Change the column count and the grid maker re-renders the preview instantly; adjust opacity until the lines support your work instead of hiding it; flip between Before and After to check that the original stays intact underneath. When it looks right, the export renders once more at full resolution — up to 4096 pixels on the long edge — so your download is crisp, never a screenshot of the preview.

A grid maker that respects your files

Your images never leave your device. Uploading happens to the page, not to a server: the grid maker reads the file in browser memory, draws on an HTML canvas and assembles the download locally. There is no upload endpoint, no storage bucket and no queue — the grid maker is private by architecture. The same applies to paper settings — your spacing and margin choices are used only to draw your own PDF.

That local design also makes the grid maker fast and endlessly free. Without server-side rendering there is nothing to meter, so there are no credits, no watermarks and no sign-up wall — just tools that work, on any modern browser, on desktop or mobile.

How to use the grid maker in four steps

  1. Pick your engine

Stay in Image mode to grid a picture, or switch to Printable paper for graph paper PDFs. The grid maker keeps your settings per engine while you work.

  2. Load your image or paper

Drag in a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB, or press Use demo image to explore first. Paper mode starts on A4 with 5 mm squares, ready to customize.

  3. Tune the grid

Set columns or pixel spacing, line color, width, opacity and labels. Every change re-renders the preview immediately — what you see is what downloads.

  4. Download the result

Export PNG or JPG from the image grid maker, or a vector PDF from the paper side. Files are generated in your browser and saved straight to your device.

What makes this grid maker different

True square cells

The grid maker derives cell size from your column count, so cells stay square on any aspect ratio — landscape, portrait or square sources all grid correctly.

Physically exact paper

Paper PDFs use real millimetre geometry with vector lines. Print at 100% and a 5 mm cell measures 5 mm — verified against A4 and US Letter specs.

Privacy by architecture

No uploads, no accounts, no server processing. The grid maker is built so your files couldn't be sent anywhere even if we wanted them.

Instant, forever free grid maker

No credits, trials or watermarks. Every export is full quality, and the grid maker stays free because your browser does the rendering.

Grid maker FAQ

Is this grid maker really free?

Yes — every feature on this grid maker is free with no sign-up, no export limits and no watermarks. Rendering happens in your browser, so there is no per-file cost to pass on.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The grid maker reads your file in local browser memory, draws the grid on a canvas and builds the download on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.

What formats can I import and export?

Import JPG, PNG and WebP up to 20 MB. The image grid maker exports PNG (with transparency when needed) and JPG; the paper engine exports vector PDF.

Do the grid lines stay square on wide images?

Yes. Square mode fixes the cell size from your column count in source pixels, so cells remain perfect squares; edge cells may be clipped by the border, never stretched.

Can this grid maker print grid paper too?

Yes — switch the grid maker to Printable paper mode. You get A4 and US Letter templates with exact 1–25 mm spacing, margins and up to 10 pages in one vector PDF.
